Large ground floor extension replacing an existing garage and conservatory on a detached Thames Ditton home, creating a completely new ground floor layout. The project delivered an open-plan kitchen and dining room, two separate living spaces, a study, a utility and boot room with dog wash, and a new home office, all connected by herringbone oak flooring and underfloor heating throughout. The clients wanted to completely rethink the ground floor of their detached home. The existing garage and conservatory were poorly used and the internal layout was fragmented. The goal was to create a series of connected but distinct spaces generous enough for family life and entertaining, with a proper kitchen at the heart of it and direct access to the garden throughout.
Ground Floor Extension & Reconfiguration
The transformation has completely reimagined what the ground floor can do. Where a garage and conservatory once sat, there is now a sequence of connected spaces: kitchen into dining, dining into living, living into a second reception, all open to the garden through full-height glazing. The circular porthole window between the two living areas is one of those details that gives the project its character: it separates the spaces visually without closing them off.
The utility and boot room is fitted out to the same standard as the kitchen. The dog wash alone, with its geometric tiled surround and brass fittings, is a project detail that clients remember. Throughout, the herringbone oak floor ties every room together while each space keeps its own identity through colour and joinery.
